When only looking at a photo of Logan Metz, I expected to hear poetry-ridden lyrics over the gentle keys of a piano or strumming of a guitar. Maybe a sound similar to Iron and Wine, slow and uplifting, with an obvious talent for songwriting.

Now, actually listening to Logan’s new album “The Last Remaining Payphone in LA” created a whole new outlook for me. The natural musical talent assumption was proven correct, but there is so much more than meets the eye.

Logan Metz is an all around musician. As a singer, songwriter and pianist he has utilized his love of music and influences from the Chicago jazz scene to record an album that spans all genres. His age does not keep him from delving into the worlds of jazz, folk and soul music similar to that of Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. Each song is a story, filled with a rich appreciation for the greats listed above, and combined with a modern twist.

The best part about “The Last Remaining Payphone in LA” is that every song is unique. The newest released single, “Interesting People,” is an uproar of energetic jazz with fast-talking lyrics and horns roaring throughout. There are also songs such as “Almost (All Mine)” and “The Rabbits” which showcase the softer side of jazz, as the band takes it nice and slow allowing the music to truly sink in. On another side of the spectrum, “Augustine” and the title track of the album are classic folk and country songs. You would think that these came from a completely different musician.

With his natural talent and an appreciation that spans genres and years of musical history, Logan Metz was able to create an album for almost everyone. It is blend of the old and the new, as Logan takes risks by not sticking to one style. It is a welcomed surprise, and certainly keeps you guessing as you listen through.
