April Martin’s musical journey is not a straightforward path. In fact, though April feels that she has always had a special connection with music, most of her professional life has been dedicated to her clinical psychology practice in New York City.

It may seem odd for a successful doctor to recording an album, but April’s experiences have informed each one of her songs. This is made apparent through her upcoming album In the Blink of a Life, to be released on December 7th.

april-martin-2Throughout the album, April uses her lyrics as a way to explore the human heart. Some songs really get your heart pumping with their upbeat harmonies while other ballads reflect the emotions of a broken heart. As a whole, the album is a mix of country, folk, blues and a little bit of rock n’ roll. The opening song “One Breath” is a personal favorite of mine, as it reminds me of a soundtrack from a Disney movie. The sing-a-long lyrics and addition of background singers reinforce this vibe for me.

Other songs such as “Heartbreak Doesn’t Come” and “The Party’s in Full Swing,” are more upbeat and sound heavily influenced by country and blues music. For me, they are songs that you would expect to hear at a county fair as people swing dance across the middle of the dancefloor.

It may have worked in April’s favor to wait until later in her life to explore her passion for music. Through her lyrics you can feel her personal experience and close connection to the human condition. This, paired with her catchy songwriting style, has created an album full of soulful acoustic melodies.

April is currently promoting In the Blink of a Life with performances in New York. Keep up to date with her upcoming shows on her website. Check out the full album below.
