In an attempt to break the confines of only being known as a “cover artist,” Portland indie-pop musician Temporary Hero has released his newest EP “You’re About to Have Your Hands Full” featuring eight original tracks. (If you’re already a fan, there are three new cover songs as well, so don’t worry.) With his futuristic pop music, Temporary Hero attempts to explore all sounds, creating dance worthy and experimental tracks of blended genres.

It is difficult to fit Temporary Hero into one category of music, as there are elements of electronic, indie rock and pop music all fused into each one of his songs. Although some parts of a particular song had me wondering where it was headed, I like that he retains a live quality to his music. Though heavily influenced by electronic music, it does not sound like it was solely created on the computer. That is apparent in his cover of Nirvana’s “Dumb,” a song that has me questioning what Kurt Cobain would think, but that also attempts to maintain similar emotions as the original track. His covers are different enough that it does not feel like he is trying to copy the song, but rather turn it into something original and unique to the Temporary Hero sound.

My favorite song off of the EP has to be “I’m So Insane.” When I first heard it, the song immediately reminded me of the band Discovery, an experimental fusion formed by members of both Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend. It is ironic that Discovery has a song titled “So Insane” that shares similar musical qualities. For me, this song has more of an indie-pop feel with an upbeat tempo and chorus you can easily sing along to.

The title “You’re About to Have Your Hands Full” perfectly describes the experience you will encounter when listening to the EP. At times it is a mix-mash of sounds, but overall still fun and interesting to listen to. Although covers may still be his go-to, Temporary Hero is on his way to crafting a unique sound all his own.
