Earlier this month, LA-based singer/songwriter Jason Garriotte aka Chords of Truth, released his first new single, “Freedom.” The song serves as an ode to classic folk and americana music, greatly influenced by some of Chord’s favorite musicians including Bob Dylan, The Band and Johnny Cash.

Chords of Truth attempts to stay close to his folk rock roots with the release of his new song. After previously releasing “Reflections of Reality,” an acoustic driven LP which inspired remixes from nearly 14 producers, Chords set his sights on Los Angeles, and used his time on the road to find new inspiration. What came from that trip is the song “Freedom” which highlights classic folk instruments paired with simple lyrics. Though I enjoy the guitar throughout the song, “Freedom” sounds a little bit too monotonous for me. The lyrics are sung with a similar tone, sounding quite low and steady, as the song continues on until its abrupt end. Though this may be the classic formula for folk music, I feel like the lyrics are just too simple to inspire me to listen more than once. Unlike the words of Johnny Cash, they do not tell a story as much as they just repeat.

This is the first single released from Chords of Truth, so there is a chance for him to show more range with the opportunity of recording a full album. However for now, I prefer listening to “Freedom” as an instrumental. Chords of Truth is currently continuing to write and record music in Los Angeles, in addition to playing shows throughout Southern California.
