If you are looking for music to comfort you as winter approaches, look no further. The latest EPs from Simon Benegas, entitled “The Age of Simple” and “Feel It Grow,” are full of acoustic indie-folk melodies.

The songs are soothing and simple, perfect for a road trip in the Northwest where you can watch the raindrops chase each other down the car windows. Similar to Jack Johnson and Iron & Wine, Simon Benegas shapes his musical identity around himself and his guitar, focusing on contemplative lyrics and a serene harmony. Simon is both a singer and songwriter and hopes that listeners are open to change their focus while on a musical journey with him.

Both EPs from Simon Benegas convey a similar sound. Most songs start with Simon’s voice and a few strums on his guitar. As the songs build, additional instruments come into play but never shift the focus away from the lyrics. The song “Sun” from Simon’s most recent EP Feel It Grow, gains momentum as you listen. With the start it is like a gently peaking of the sun rising through the curtains until it eventually shines overhead by the song’s end. Since finding his role as a songwriter at the Berklee College of Music, Simon has written lyrics with the goal of conveying positive thinking. “Sun,” in addition to the other songs throughout both EPs, remains uplifting and leaves you with an eagerness to take on the day. In the music video, you can see the happiness in Simon as he performs.
