For multi-talented singer/songwriter/producer and performer Galen James, the best way to experience his music is by seeing him and his band Compendium, live.

James promises “a unique and awesome performance” every time, which you could attest to if you were lucky enough to catch him in his hometown here in Austin this past Fall. If you have yet to see him live, no need to worry. You can hear the best of Galen James on the recently released Big Blue Mixtape, a compilation of the best songs from his past three albums.

galen-james-2The best way to describe Big Blue Mixtape is that it is an album without limitations. James delves into nearly every genre: blues, jazz, rock, pop, r&b and even a bit of gospel. Each song is different from the next, all connected through James’ powerful and versatile vocals. Some songs have been recorded live, giving them an extra punch of energy that James has referred to when describing his performances. One of my favorite tracks is “Night Music (Live).” The horns add to the pop-infused song making me want to dance along. Other noteworthy songs include “Stars” and “How To Find You,” both of which sound like pop-rock ballads with an added big band jazz influence. Galen James reminds me of everyone and no one all at once. His songs are both similar and completely unique. It is a rarity to find such a new spin on music that sounds completely original.

With each track you will want to keep listening, and lucky for you Big Blue Mixtape includes twenty of Galen James’ best songs. Be prepared to go on a journey of sounds, as this album explores James’ versatility and spans all musical genres.
