Left/Right shares his “secret recipe” for a great track within his scene. It’s less about the formula and more about the tools and workflow to expose tips and inspiration!
1Themes

As Left/Right I make dark, enigmatic dance music: House, Garage, Breaks for the club. I combine power with beauty (dance music tracks don’t typically have both). I have degrees in music composition & audio engineering, allowing me to improvise with structure as I play guitar, cello, keyboard and sing. My new project You Us We Them is surreal & nature-oriented and follows my career transition to composer and adds more visual art.
2Equipment

I work primarily in Ableton 11 on my Macbook Pro with Adam A7X and Mackie 824 monitors. For Left/Right I start with 808 or 909 beats, aiming for a dystopian/urban sound. Then the low-end and hook on my Moog Grandmother or a VST like Serum, Sylenth or NI Komplete (I like Monark). For You Us We Them I usually start writing on my synths: Nord Lead & Prophet Rev2. I’ll also record and sample field recordings: ambient textures, guitar, weird beats.
3Live

I’ve been DJing since 2000. I love club culture—sweaty dance parties where you don’t know where the DJ is. I’m all about the music, vibe and immersion—incorporating installation and projection art. For YUWT I’ll have live vocals, Ableton Push 2, live guitar and Prophet & Nord synths.
