Austin artist & Issue 17 contributor Dawn Winter uses a palette knife to paint abstract pieces that are full of texture.
Tell us more about you.
I am an abstract artist who loves color and texture. I’ve shown my work with Austin Art Garage and several other shows (EAST/WEST) for about 10 years. I’ve had prints available with Anthropologie and currently with Neiman Marcus and Horchow.
“Painting is my escape.”

What is your artistic process like?
My paintings begin with a fairly vague image in mind, but based on our natural environment, my favorite color combinations and my current temperament. I use a palette knife to apply several layers and I love this tactile experience, scrapping off layers and seeing colors “poke” through. Although I have a plan/image in mind, the painting always determines the final outcome. I find this deeply satisfying, especially when “real life” is full of details. Painting is my escape. I cannot imagine painting any other way.
