If you are nostalgic for some 90s alternative rock, give a listen to the newest EP from The Slang out this summer called “Night and Day.”

The Slang is a DC rock duo consisting of two Johns: John Bobo, primarily the songwriter and vocalist and John Newsome, the bassist. On their newest EP, they also had some musical help from fellow accredited musicians, Miles McPherson on drums and Matt Slocum with strings. They say “Night and Day” reflects the changes the band has experienced when recording the EP. First off, the change of scenery. They chose to record in Nashville as opposed to New York City, giving their sound a more authentic rock feel. Secondly, they went from a trio to a duo. Perhaps the third member wasn’t named John?

However many changes The Slang continues to undergo, their songs sound similar to me. The title track “Night and Day” has a 90s rock feel, reminding me of Matchbox 20 and The Goo Goo Dolls. It sounds like a song you would hear playing in a local fair, though that could be the visuals from the music video creating ideas in my mind.

Most of the other songs on the EP have a similar sound. They are alternative rock songs influenced by the simple choruses and chords of punk songs. However, there is a quality of competing forces in their songs that mirror their night and day idea. Quite a few of the songs blend soft intros with loud choruses where they really rock out. I like that The Slang carry their vision all the way through their EP, though I think some deviation from the typical rock formula would be a welcome change.
