We sat down with Molly Maroney and Heath Speakman of Austin’s own SprATX following their Impossible Walls Project to talk Austin street murals, mantras and money.

SprATX have truly tagged their spot in the Austin Art community since their start in 2013. Heath explains, “we get a lot of support for some reason.” It’s clear he’s still trying to wrap his head around the winning formula they’ve mixed up. They’ve brought an infamous art form into the spotlight and they’re doing it right, supporting artists and beautifying the community all at once. Molly pitches, “the reason you like it out here is because it’s weird and colorful” in an effort to keep Austin’s vibe alive amidst the rapidly changing landscape.
The original goal was to take artists further—to get them known in the community. And they have. Their goal now is to refine the opportunities for artists, specifically to get them paid. “That said,” Heath adds, “sometimes the best, most creatively stimulating jobs are free. That’s fine because that’s where you grow.” He concludes with some advice: “Everybody gets a lot further by rolling with the punches and evolving on the spot. Learning with a good attitude will gain you more respect than just skill alone.”
