Writer Alexis Sleeper has turned the surreal into the hyperreal. Her poems are there and then they’re gone. And Austin Craigslist is her journal.

We featured Alexis Sleeper in Issue 18 to showcase her surreal poems. She came with a unique idea: post poems in Craigslist’s missed connections section and see what happens.

“I play with that boundary between what is real/authentic and what is performance or simulated reality.”

Alexis has been a part of the Almost Real Things team for years, and we we’re so happy to feature her written pieces. Would you respond to these missed connections?

Can you share more about this series?

I’ve been posting my poems in (mostly) Austin’s Craigslist missed connections section. I think that it plays with that boundary between what is real/authentic and what is performance, simulated reality.

None of those Craigslist poems are to anyone, but they are a demonstration for everyone to interpret. Perhaps not ‘surreal’ but it is ‘hyperreal.’
