Tom Besson has experienced Austin in all its phases.
He first moved here in 1974 to join the counter-culture movement and continued to integrate within the art community.
Besson describes his work as “figurative while widely skirting realism.”
His influences come from both his experiences here and his Czech roots. In the 90s he traced his ancestors back to the Czech Republic and now owns a studio and creates there in the summer.
In his own words, Besson describes his work as “figurative while widely skirting realism.” He combines the two worlds of Paganism and Roman Catholicism, which create many contrasting elements in his paintings. He believes all art can be interpreted in many different ways and that reality comes with inherent limitations, and the rest is up to us. Besson also explores the driving spirit behind life and how we relate to nature through his paintings.
Tom Besson was featured in our double issue 03 & 04. You can find more of his work on his website.
